Myth #1
The primary means of producing comedy material and making it funny is by using "joke formulas."

Fact: " Joke formulas" WON'T automatically make you funny on stage.

As a matter of fact, the words used in any verbal communication (including stand-up comedy) only account for about 7% of the information you are trying to convey, no matter what system or method you are using to produce and deliver stand-up comedy material.

How you say (and express) anything you want to say to an audience is far more important than mere words structured in some sort of "joke formula" method.

Trying to use "joke formulas" to get the high level of funny you want on stage is like trying to dig a swimming pool with a spoon.

Myth #2 Jokes are developed one at a time on paper. The more jokes you write, the more "good" ones you will "find."

Fact: This whole notion of working on single jokes, one at a time and then attempting to "connect" them in some meaningful way that will generate big laughs is a very old, worn out and largely ineffective concept.

When I say old, I'm talking 30 to 50 years old (even older if you go back to Vaudeville times when they basically used the same methodology).

Jokes written on paper may "read" funny but can -- and will -- flop on stage. Why?

First of all, we "write" differently than we actually talk.

Secondly, an audience is not going to "read" your act -- they are going to experience it, the way you deliver it to them.

Plus, joke writing is hard and takes years to learn.

Trying to "write" funny jokes from thin air, "stringing" them together and expecting big laughs on stage is much like trying to eat soup with a toothpick.

But you DON'T have to be a great "joke writer" to develop and deliver super funny stand-up comedy material for the stage.

Myth #3 If you tell a story, you are not doing stand-up. Stories are not jokes and they don't work on the stand-up comedy stage.

Fact: One of the most prolific stand-up comedy "experts" continues to spread this sort of mythical nonsense year after year.

Unfortunately, this "expert" has failed to recognize that some of the most successful comedians, including Bill Cosby, Jeff Foxworthy, Ellen DeGeneres, Tim Allen, Eddie Izzard, Bill Engvall, Larry The Cable Guy (just to mention a very few) all use a conversational stand-up comedy style that involves "story telling".

"Stories" allow you to stay on a single topic longer. Because the audience already knows what your "story" or topic is about, you automatically use less words as you continue to tell your "story".

Less set-up words and set-up lines equate to more frequent punchlines and allows you to quickly gain the momentum you need to "get on a roll".

Let me make it clear as a bell that you ABSOLUTELY can tell stories as a stand-up comedian, provided they are properly structured to get a minimum of 4-6 laughs per minute.

Myth #4 Who you are on stage is some sort of other character – it's not really you.

Fact: You can be yourself on stage and command huge laughs.

If you have a sense of humor that has made people laugh consistently in everyday life -- for years -- you are already your own best character.

You just need the tools and the knowledge to capture your own unique sense of humor and condense it for the stand-up comedy stage.

Myth #5 Success in stand-up is largely dependent on having a unique or original look, hook, persona, character, presence, point of view, or anything thing else that will make you stand out from the rest of the comedians.

Fact: If you are able to kill an audience on stage consistently, you are already in the top 5% of all comedians anywhere -- without having to wear a Donald Duck suit to try to "stand out" from the other comedians.

It is also interesting to note that virtually every stand-up comedy "guru" that is willing to tell you that you need to become a "character" or get a "hook" can't even begin to tell you HOW to do it.

Myth #6 You can "learn" to become funny or funnier than you really are.

Fact: Unless you are able to get brain transplant surgery, there is not a single book, course or technique (including anything I have to offer you) that can make you instantly "funny" or somehow "funnier" than you really are.

This is primarily a marketing ploy used by so-called stand-up comedy "experts" to sell books and courses to people who want to become stand-up comedians, but really don't have what it takes to entertain an audience.

Myth #7 It takes many years to become a funny comedian on stage.

Fact: If you are writing one joke at a time and trying to find that "special" character you think you need to be, then the answer is -- yes, it can certainly take you years, possibly decades before you ever experience the big laughs on stage.

At the beginning of your comedy career, stage time is a rare commodity. You need to know how to use every single performing opportunity you get to improve your performance for every show.

It doesn't have to take years to get good on the comedy stage -- you can literally do it in months if you are armed with the right information, the right tools and some real stand-up comedy secrets that actually work.
